Melville constructs a biography largely based on excerpts from Lady Mary's letters. She is most famous today for introducing the early form of smallpox vaccine to Britain, which she had witnessed while living in the Ottoman Empire with her husband, and for her letters from Turkey. She corresponded with many important figures of her time, wrote poetry and essays, and argued for the
