¿Which songs to choose for every moment in my wedding?

In this article, I will discuss the four most important moments in a wedding and how music is involved in them.

Let’s get started!

1.- Ceremony

First, if you are having a religious ceremony, you need to know if the church (temple) where you will be celebrating the ceremony allows you to choose the songs. If it is a civil wedding, obviously, you will have no problem.

Entrance of the groom

Any of your favorite songs would work well, whatever the style.

Entrance of the bride

A romantic song is appropriate for this moment, as all eyes will be on the bride, and she will be showing off her dress, so the calmer the song, the better. Of course, if you want to walk in to Skrillex or Iron Maiden, go ahead! It’s your wedding.

Readings

If you were to play any music, it should be soft, instrumental, and only until the reading begins. No background music—it should be possible to hear what is being said clearly.

Ring exchange

Here, some instrumental or romantic music, not too loud, just to accompany the moment.

Exit of both as husband and wife

Here it could be something romantic or something more disco-like, as long as it’s civil, of course.

Not all of the moments described above are mandatory. For example, sometimes only the bride’s entrance and the exit of both are done.

2.- Appetizers

If you want music during your appetizers, medium-tempo music is ideal. Choose songs that you like and that encourage you to dance without being too disco-like. Jazz or bossa nova, for example, are also very useful. In short, something lively without being danceable is the most recommended. This way, guests will enter the banquet after an ideal appetizer.

If you are entering the appetizer as a married couple, you could choose a fresh, upbeat song, or a slow, romantic song would also work well.

3.- Banquet

The background music should be calm, soft, and at a moderate volume so that guests can converse. At specific moments, the DJ will turn up the volume of certain songs (previously chosen by the bride and groom) to highlight the following:

Entrance of the bride and groom

Here, everyone expects a fun, upbeat song that gets them on their feet… a prelude to the big party that is about to begin.

Entrance of the dishes

It was a classic. It fell out of favor but is now slowly making a comeback. Usually at the DJ’s discretion.

Cake entrance

This is one of the most important moments of the reception, along with the entrance and the first dance, so choosing the theme will not be an easy task. Either a lively or a slow song will work, depending on your musical taste.

Gift for the bride and groom/dolls

Here, you usually choose the couple’s favorite song, band, or singer, as many songs as you want to give out. If you give out more than one with the same theme, it detracts from the importance of the act itself.

Important note to keep in mind. This moment usually coincides with people getting up to go to the bathroom or smoke, so you have to be attentive and always look at the table to make sure your guests haven’t moved from their seats so you can give them their gift.

Bride’s bouquet gift

An important moment and a special gift. I give you the same advice as for the dolls. Personalized song and make sure it’s on their table.

Gift for mothers/fathers

A very emotional moment, so the song has to be special. I recommend that each one go to their parents.

Wedding dance

We can choose from a ballad to a mix, and from there start the open bar and disco.

4.- Disco

Almost anything goes here, and the DJ has the great responsibility of ensuring that the guests leave saying, “It was by far the best wedding ever.” Here is a link to another article in which I talked about how to choose songs for your wedding disco.
